About Joe

Joe Robinson is a 56 year old Ironman. He started his fitness/racing career in 1975 with RAGBRAI 3 and has continued riding ever since. Joe started running and swimming in 1980 in preparation for the Iowa City Triathlon. The first Ironman distance event in the United States other than Ironman Kona. Joe completed this race in September of 1980 and was hooked. As result, he raced Ironman Kona in February 1981, the Iowa City Triathlon in September 1981 and Ironman Kona in 1982 with a personal best of 10 hours 44 minutes. Following this race, Joe continued to participate in several smaller triathlons between 1982 and 1987. He has also completed 15 marathons between the years of 1980 and 1987 with a PR of 2:39:52.

Joe also volunteered as the Assistant coach for the Cross Country team at East High School for 13 years (1983-1995). During this time, he took a long break from racing between 1988 and 2003. In 2003, Joe participated in his first adventure race. This event reignited his competitive spirit and he entered the CyMan triathlon in 2005. He has been participating in triathlons ever since. Although his times are slower than in the 1980s, he still continues to place well in his age division at each event. Joe even decided to compete in another Ironman event when his sons goaded him into it. He completed Ironman Florida in November 2006 and is going to do it again in November 2008.
